I just retired with 30 years as an elementary teacher in Osceola County Florida. I primarily taught 3rd and 4th grade Reading and Writing. I am certified with the state of Florida. My school's FSA Reading test results were outstanding and showed growth results above most schools in my district. My students did an outstanding job despite most of them being digital learners the entire year. Others were digital learners for the first semester. My digital class was a Gifted class so it was necessary to challenge them with higher level texts and activities. One activity was weekly debates on multiple issues.

My 30 years of teaching were mainly as a Reading teacher. Finding interesting text is very critical to keeping a student engaged. Whether a passage is about giant sequoia trees or the duck billed platypus, kids are interested. I often end a lesson by finding an image or video of what we learned about.
Reading isn't my only teaching strength. I also teach writing. I start with a simple paragraph and move up to a full essay. My state of Florida gives 4th graders a Writing test every year. It is my job to prepare students to plan and write that essay. It is amazing to see a student start the year with a simple paragraph and end it with an essay that has a controlling main idea, transitional words, details, elaboration, and a high vocabulary.
